Finding Home in South Beach: The Frenchs’ Travel Tradition

A Legacy of Love and Sunshine: The Frenchs’ Florida Story

As told in a phone interview

Some places become more than just vacation destinations—they become traditions, legacies, and second homes. That’s exactly what Florida, and specifically South Beach, has become for the Frenches, a couple whose story is as heartwarming as the sunsets that greet them each year.

In a recent phone interview, I had the pleasure of speaking with Mrs. French, who graciously shared how their love for Florida has grown over the years—starting with her late father-in-law.

It all began more than two decades ago, when Jim’s parents started wintering in Florida. After his cancer diagnosis, they made the heartfelt decision to return to a place they loved. “They told him going back to Florida was a good idea,” she said, recalling those difficult days. “When he passed in the spring of 2003, my husband drove his mom down. She still wanted to go, and we made sure she got there.”

That trip was the beginning of a routine filled with love and loyalty. “She wasn’t ready that first winter,” Mrs. French continued, “but in September 2004, we drove her and her car back down. We were younger and still working then, so we’d fly home and return at spring break to drive her back.”

They kept that tradition going until just a few years ago. “When she turned 90, she said, ‘I’m not going back anymore,’” Mrs. French recalled. But by then, the connection had already taken deep root.

South Beach became more than just a getaway, it was the backdrop for cherished milestones. “They even hosted Jim’s mom’s 80th birthday party there,” she said fondly. “And later, we held a wedding celebration there for one of our family members. It’s a special place for all of us.”

After Jim retired two years ago, the couple started extending their stays. “We were already familiar with the area. Over the years, we’ve met so many people who return just like us. Some buy condos, others just come back to the same beach places. Everyone loves it—it’s just that kind of place.”

Their story is also about community. “We love the cleaning ladies. We love Nikki. It’s just such a fun and friendly area. We even bring little gifts from Indiana when we come. People really appreciate that.”

Even their golden retriever has become part of the Florida family. “He absolutely loves Nikki,” she laughed. “This year when we were leaving, Nikki noticed the dog looked sad. We all did. Even he knows when it’s time to go.” Over the years, their pup has made friends of his own—playing with neighbors’ dogs and bringing smiles to everyone he meets.

With years of memories behind them—and likely many more to come—the Frenches remain deeply tied to this sun-soaked community. “We’ve stayed in just about every room,” she said. “Each one is unique. We love them all.”

And they’re already planning their return.

“We’re coming back in January,” Mrs. French said warmly.                                      “And we can’t wait.”

P.S the French’s room of choice has recntly been Room 106.
